How and why we collect data at Citymapper
We've never sold user data or relied on advertising to make money. This means we don’t sell your data to advertisers.
Instead of relying on advertising, our business model uses data to improve how people get around their cities. We aggregate the A to Bs people have searched for (or journeys they've taken, if they hit "Go") in order to identify gaps in the transport system. Then we run our own transport to fill those gaps. We did this with our nightbus route, our blackbus partnership, and are currently pursuing this with . We also launched a Citymapper travel pass in February 2019 called “Pass”, which we created by understanding travel patterns in London, and which we plan to customise over time so travellers can buy a Pass that’s perfect for them.
We care where and when people travel, but we don't share that information with anyone else.
We also ask you for the least amount of information needed to do our job. For example, for journey planning we don’t require you to log in because we don’t need to know your name or email to do that. But we do require that information if you want to save your favourite places and routes across your devices. If you want to use Ride or Pass, we ask you for your name, email and payment details in order to pay for those services. In the case of Pass, we also need your home address and date of birth so that we can verify your identity and your mobile number if you choose to use a mobile payment system for your Pass card.
